Career readiness assessment tools, compared

Every tool below is real, is used by US institutions, and does something worthwhile. They do not all do the same thing, and most evaluation confusion comes from comparing a competency assessment with an engagement tracker as though they were rivals.

Verified 2026-08-02, from each vendor's own public pages, linked below. None of these vendors publishes pricing on their site; where that is stated it is a fact about the page, not a comment on the price.

The three categories

Competency assessment. Measures whether students demonstrate defined competencies, and asks somebody other than the student. Answers "are our students becoming employable, and who says so". This is where NACE Ready and the Career Readiness Report sit.

Experience and field assessment. Manages placements, collects supervisor evaluations, and feeds programmatic accreditation, usually for licensure programs. Watermark Student Learning & Licensure.

Standardised skills testing. Administers a proctored instrument and returns scores against national norms. CAE's CLA+.

Adjacent, and frequently confused with all three: co-curricular engagement tracking (Suitable's core platform, Anthology Engage) records what students did; recruiting platforms (Handshake) connect students to employers. Both matter. Neither measures competency development.

What each one does

NACE Ready, by Suitable

The official NACE competency assessment tool, built under an exclusive partnership between NACE and Suitable. Its public page describes students rating themselves "in each competency, across 4 levels of proficiency", and observer feedback "typically from internship supervisors, faculty, or mentors" that "compares a student's self-rating with real-world, observed behaviors". Institutions get individual career readiness reports, the ability to "[c]ompare your data against national benchmarks", demographic filtering, custom tags and custom questions. This is the closest thing to a direct equivalent of what we do, and it has two things we do not: the NACE endorsement, and national benchmark data. See the longer comparison.

Suitable (the platform)

Mobile-first student engagement and success software: guided pathways, student organisation management, and co-curricular transcripts, described as "a dynamic, real-time co-curricular record of the entire college experience". The NACE assessment tool is available as part of it. Pricing is not published. Source: suitable.co.

Watermark Student Learning & Licensure

Built for course-embedded and field experience assessment. It coordinates placements for clinical programs, "gathers assessments directly from supervisors", holds artifacts and reflections in student ePortfolios, and its data feeds Watermark Planning & Self-Study for accreditation and continuous improvement. If your need is licensure and clinical placement management, this category fits it and a competency assessment tool does not.

CAE, CLA+

A standardised assessment of higher-order skills: critical thinking, problem solving and communication, returning a total score and mastery-level classifications for higher education students. Pricing is not published. Source: cae.org.

Different evidence from ours in a way worth understanding: a proctored instrument measures what a student can do under test conditions, and observer ratings measure what they did do at work over a semester. Accreditors accept both, and they are not substitutes.

Anthology Engage

Co-curricular engagement: involvement tracking, automated and verified co-curricular records, guided pathways toward "goals, competencies, and established learning outcomes", and badging. Handshake

The recruiting side: an employer and jobs network for students, plus career centre operations, describing itself as "[t]he largest, most trusted network for careers in the AI economy". Its career centre pages do not describe competency assessment. Pricing is not published. Source: joinhandshake.com.

The Career Readiness Report

The eight NACE competencies on a five-point frequency scale, student self-assessment plus ratings from the employers and faculty who supervised the work, collected through a single-use link that requires no account for the rater. Per-student reports with the self-versus-observer gap, cohort analytics with response rates, accreditation exports, institution branding on your own subdomain, and optional campus SSO. What we do not have, stated here rather than discovered later: no NACE endorsement, no national benchmark data yet (the mechanism is built, the comparison set does not exist until more institutions run windows), no independent validation study, no job board, no employer CRM, no appointment scheduling, and a beta label that stays until a careers office has run a full term through it.
