Career readiness evidence your accreditor will accept

Accreditors increasingly ask programs to demonstrate student attainment of employability skills with evidence, not assertion. The Career Readiness Report produces both indirect evidence (student self-assessment against the eight NACE competencies) and direct evidence (ratings from the employers and faculty who actually supervised the work), mapped to your program learning outcomes and exportable for AACSB, ABET and regional review.

Direct and indirect evidence

Accreditors distinguish between the two, and the distinction determines how much weight a body of evidence carries.

Indirect evidence is what students report about their own learning: surveys, self-assessments, exit interviews. It is genuinely useful for understanding student perception and it is easy to collect at scale, but on its own it is generally treated as supporting rather than primary evidence.

Direct evidence demonstrates what students can actually do, as judged by someone other than the student. Rubric-scored artifacts are the classic example. Ratings from a workplace supervisor who observed the student over a full internship are another, and for employability outcomes specifically they are often the most relevant evidence available.

Most career readiness tools generate only the first kind. Collecting supervisor ratings on the same instrument as the student's self-assessment produces both from a single exercise.

Mapping to program learning outcomes

The eight NACE competencies rarely map one-to-one onto a program's stated outcomes, and pretending otherwise weakens the argument. The practical approach is a documented mapping table showing which competencies serve as evidence for which outcome, with partial mappings marked as partial.

For a business program under AACSB, competencies such as Communication, Teamwork, Critical Thinking and Professionalism usually align closely with existing assurance-of-learning goals. For an engineering program under ABET, several of the student outcomes covering communication, teamwork, ethical responsibility and lifelong learning have clear counterparts, while the technical outcomes do not and should be evidenced separately.

Closing the loop

Accreditors care less about the instrument than about what the program did with the results. A defensible cycle looks like this:

  1. Define which outcomes the competency data will evidence, and the mapping.
  2. Collect self and supervisor ratings across a defined cohort and term.
  3. Analyze by cohort, major and term, and identify the weakest competencies.
  4. Make a specific curricular or programmatic change in response.
  5. Re-measure in a later term and report whether the change moved the number.

The fifth step is the one programs most often cannot evidence, usually because the original data was collected inconsistently or the instrument changed. Using a stable instrument across terms is what makes step five possible at all.

What the export contains

Exports are built for the review rather than for a dashboard: competency-level results by cohort, major and term; the split between self-assessment and supervisor observation; response rates, which reviewers do ask about; the mapping from competencies to your stated learning outcomes; and term-over-term comparison where you have more than one cycle of data.

A caveat worth stating: no platform can produce accreditation evidence on its own. The instrument supplies the data and the mapping. The analysis, the curricular response and the narrative are the program's work, and reviewers can tell the difference.
